Include Your Pets!

One of your best walking buddies has four legs and a wagging tail!

My three standard poodles love Walk Kansas. When I walk in the door from work....they are ready to go! - Douglas County

Dogs know instinctively that exercise is good for them and walking your dog promotes a sense of bonding between you and your pet.

Research shows that dog owners are more likely to take regular walks and that they are more active overall than people who don't have dogs. Dogs are good workout buddies because they are never late and rarely have a schedule conflict. Dogs won't whine about the weather, they are never critical of you, and are always enthusiastic.

Most dogs will benefit from a 30-minute walk every day. If you are walking your dog during warm weather, bring water along because they cannot cool themselves as efficiently as humans can. Take it easy when temperatures climb above 85 degrees.

Celebrating Success!

After a heart operation 8 years ago and now with AFib, vigorous exercise for me is walking up and down hills with my dogs. I appreciate your definition of "vigorous" activity, since I think this helps people like me participate. "Vigorous" for me has certainly changed in the last 10 years!
